HANNA Instruments DIST3 honey conductivity meter . Reliable, pocket-sized instrument that ensures fast and accurate conductivity (EC) and total dissolved solids (TDS) readings.
Supplied complete with protective cap, screwdriver, batteries and instructions. Range 1999 μS/cm. Resolution 1 μS/cm. Accuracy (at 20º) +- 2% FR. Batteries 4x1.5v (approx. 200 hours of continuous use). Dimensions 175x41x23mm. Weight 95 g.

It is measured to help discriminate the botanical origin of honeys, and, in particular, to distinguish between floral honeys and honeydew honeys (honeydew) . This measurement is directly proportional to the mineral salt content (analytically also called "ash").

Interpretation of results:

Honeydew honeys (honeydew, mela) from cork oak, holm oak (quercus sp), pine, fir... have conductivities higher than 800 μS/cm . Forest honey (a mixture of honeydew and flowering plants) usually has a conductivity range between 800 - 900 μS/cm. How to work for approximate measurements:

  1. Clean and rinse a 50-100 ml graduated beaker (or urine sample container) marked with 25 ml with distilled water.

  2. Using a coffee spoon, take 6.0 g of honey (weigh with a precision scale to at least tenths of a g).

  3. Dissolve the honey with a little distilled water. When the honey is dissolved, add more distilled water until reaching 25 ml. If you do it by weight, you should add 21 g of distilled water.

  4. Remove the lower protective cover of the conductivity meter and move the upper start button to the left: the display should show 000 in the centre (depending on the model). If it shows any other number, this reading should be adjusted to zero by washing the electrodes with distilled water.
    Calibrate if necessary.

  5. Completely immerse the conductivity meter electrodes in the honey solution, shake gently to release any bubbles and read the conductivity on the display.
The reading is considered stable if it remains fixed for a minimum of 5 seconds. The reading is given in μS/cm.

  6. Before a new measurement, wash the electrodes with distilled water and dry them with a tissue or soft cotton cloth. Remember to turn off the screen with the top button when you finish working, and dry the electrodes well before replacing the cover of the conductivity meter.

  7. To verify the effectiveness of your measurement, take several measurements with the same honey; the results should be similar.
